VPN is "Virtual Private Network" Basically, VPN refers to technology that extends trustworthiness to remote computers & users while using the public network. VPN uses PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) or IPSec to connect a "remote" computer to a central VPN server in order to allow access to various services. The "remote" computer might be a home system (connecting through Telus or Shaw, or whatever) or a computer connecting wirelessly either on campus or elsewhere. A Cisco AnyConnect VPN client can be downloaded from https://myvpn.ubc.ca. The client should connect to the server myvpn.ubc.ca. Log onto the VPN using your CWL credentials. If you have been granted access to the ECE VPN, append.ece to your CWL login. For example, if your CWL login is spock, log on as spock.ece. Using VPN IT, Media and Classroom Services offers free VPN (Virtual Private Network) services to UBC students, faculty, and staff at both the Vancouver and Okanagan campus' to help keep their information safe. The UBC VPN service uses encryption to protect data as it travels between your computer and the VPN server. When there is confidence the release is fairly stable, UBC IT makes that version available to the campus community. Bug issues take time to emerge and for the vendor to address. This process may take weeks, so it is recommended to postpone OS upgrades until a supported version of VPN client is available for use.
